Accepted Answer

No: No, an IUD is implanted to help try to prevent pregnancy.  It has nothing to do with trying to prevent std infections.  It has absolutely no effect on risks of getting an std. Also, having an IUD inserted may actually increase the risk of obtaining an std, particularly within a few weeks of impantation. Overall, women at high risk for STDs are to be cautioned about the risks of iuds and stds.

i got the skyla iud. i'm not worried about stds.. are condoms necessary while using the iud or can i stop using them?

No: No.  Although the IUD will be very protective against pregnancy, there is still a failure rate of 3%. When it fails, ectopic(tubal) pregnancy is often the result with sometimes dire consequences. Moreover, IUD strings have been known to conduct bacteria up the string into the intrauterine space &amp; Fallopian tubes causing chronic salpingitis  (PID) which can cause sterility.

can bv cause inflamed fallopian tubes? i suspect i have pid from past iud,but obgyn insisting i dont because uterus looks normal and i have no severe pain. i have bv. i have yellow discharge. doctor said its not severely inflamed. std test clear?

: BV increases the risk of PID and some of the bacteria associated with BV can contribute to Fallopian tube inflammation from PID. Hard to know how to interpret yellow/colored discharge, which certainly suggests infection; and "not severely inflamed". Standard advice (e.g. from CDC) is that treatment for PID should be given if PID is even suspected, whether or not proved.

Exam needed: There may be a slight change in vaginal discharge in IUD users. Specific cases of vaginal discharge have to be diagnosed by testing. We can not know remotely. Bacterial vaginosis is the most common abnormal vaginal discharge.

Yeast infection?: These symptoms suggest a vaginal yeast infection, which doesn't show up on routine STD testing. It's not an STD. Try an over-the-counter yeast treatment -- look for a product ending in "azole" (miconazole, clotrimazole, etc). You can use the cheapeast; they all work equally well. See your doctor promptly, preferably whoever put in your IUD, if the symptoms don't clear up within a week.

Mirena IUD: The Mirena IUD is 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.  IUDs do not protect against STDs. Using a condom will also decrease your risk of contracting a STD.

i had unprotected sex while on monistat 1. i forgot we had to wait 24hrs or more. we are both clean from std. would this cause harm to either of us? seman was released inside of me will the monistat 1 develop an std? will my kyleena iud fail?

: No harm at all, nothing to worry about. IUD effectiveness isn't change at all. Of course you cannot develop an STD just by having sex, only if your partner is infected and you catch an STD from him.

: No, you are protected with kyleena and monistat does not promote common STDs. Chance of partner of getting yeast balanitis is possible though. Good luck and be careful in the future.
