Ice for 1st 2 days: In general, ice will help decrease swelling and pain for the first 2 days.  Topical antibiotic ointment will prevent infection if blistering occurs.  If just red like a sunburn, don't worry.  If you have no sensation of the burn area, it may be a deep burn (deep enough to damage nerve endings).  If so, get to see your doctor to make sure you don't need more aggressive care than above.

i burned my hand with boiling water and its burning really bad. if i put vaporub on it will it make it worse?

Vaporub won't help: You need to keep the wound clean and apply a topical antibiotic ointment (e.g., polysporin, (bacitracin and polymyxin) bacitracin, neosporin, triple-antibiotic ointment). Use Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen for pain. Get good nutrition to have all the necessary building blocks for wound healing. If the wound is not healing soon (i.e., in 1 to 2 weeks), or if it seems like it's getting infected, seek formal medical attention.

how do i cut down on oven burn pain? i burned my hand on the side of the oven when trying to pull a cookie sheet out with a small oven pad.  what can i do to reduce the pain?

The : The most effective thing you can do for pain control for a small burn is elevate it above the level of your heart.  You may ice it a few times through a piece of cloth, but don't do this for more than 5-10 minutes at a time, and for no more than half a day total. Over the counter pain medicines will help- try Ibuprofen (also known as Motrin or advil) as long as you don't have stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, or kidney problems. Bandage it with Bacitracin ointment (available over the counter). Keep an eye on it for signs of infection, if the redness spreads, or if there is drainage other than clear or straw-colored, see your doctor. Generally the pain is only severe for 12-24 hours.

i burned my hand rather badly on the bottom of a pot and im wondering if its infected or if i need medical attention. i imminently couldn't feel it and i rushed it under mildly cold running water for about 10 min as soon as i noticed the burn, after that

It : It can be difficult to distinguish a severe burn from an infection.  Both will be red.  Both will have drainage, particularly if blisters have ruptured.  Both will be tender to the touch.

If the redness is increasing, the pain is increasing, or the drainage is abundant and has a foul odor, it is more likely infected.  One thing many patients overlook is the possibility of getting tetanus from a burn.  If your last immunization was more than 5 years ago, you should get a new one.

It is very helpful to have a hand surgeon look at the burn.  He/she can help distinguish between the tissue damage from the burn itself and an infection that requires antibiotics.  Often, silvadene (silver sulfadiazine) cream will be used as an anti-septic and salve.

Thankfully, the palm of the hand has a very thick dermis layer and it takes a lot of heat to create a full-thickness (third degree) burn.  A hot pan can deliver that amount of heat depending on its temperature, thickness, and the amount of time your hand was in contact.

If the burn leaves an elongated scar, it can cause contractures, where the skin tightens and it becomes more difficult to open your hand.  A hand surgeon can also help determine if the scar will be a problem and needs releases or skin grafting.

i burned my hand in the upper element broiler. i didn't feel it. it charred the skin, leaving a pale patch in the middle. is this a 3rd degree burn?

Burns: If you did not feel any pain with the burn, it means you had a 3rd degree burn, as in 3rd degree burns your nerve endings get burned a swell thereby eliminating pain sensation.  You should see a doctor if it is a large area of burn. 3rd degree burns can lead to scarring.

strong pulse in hands when i lay down & pressure/inflamed/burning/tingling feeling in veins in hands & forearms. why? no anxiety. normal weight.

UNusual: The cause of this is unclear.  If you have taken too much caffeine or using cocaine this might occur. You might also consider that this could be related to the use of too much thyroid medicine or  having a high thyroid problems such as grave's disease.

I would advise that you be seen sooner than later by your primary care doc - you may have a problem in your cervical spine putting pressure on nerves and causing your tingling.  Best of luck to you!
