What is the context: Depends on what you are looking for. No simple test. There are specific tests for certain things (penicillin).  There are a few tests done to determine if an individual can tolerate a certain med (G6PD). Mostly, though, it comes down to trial of a med and knowledge  of what to look for. For example if you get a cough with ACE inhib (lisinopril) your DR will change you to ARB (valsartan)

can you take bactroban (mupirocin) if you have a sulfa drug allergy?

Yes: Bactroban (mupirocin) is a topical medication for treating skin infections.  If you have an allergy to sulfa antibiotics, you should not have a problem with bactroban (mupirocin) which is not absorbed into your system and should not cause an allergic reaction in those with a sulfa antibiotic (which is absorbed).

is neomycin sulfate a sulfa drug, that would cause an allergy if applied to skin?

: It is possible, but an infection is also a possible cause. Watch for redness, swelling and fever.

Antihistamine: Try Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Be careful as this may cause drowsiness.

Probably not..: Since you have been on it at a significant dosage for so long, your adrenal glands are likely "suppressed", probably permanently by this time. So, my gues is that your chance of going off this medicine totally is rather low. Maybe you can lower the dose, but you should consult your doc. Good luck.

Antihistamine: benadryl (diphenhydramine) use is DANGEROUS if you intend to drive.
Zyrtec, Loratidine etc are safer choices. Best if taken at night time so that you awake without allergy symptoms

Not usually: You should discuss your concerns with the doctor who prescribed the medications. It is not a routine practice to test for allergies or do blood levels for most drugs.

can a minor drug allergy just go away over time? like if a person had mild hives from nsaids, or any pill for that matter, could alrgy vanish one day?

Not really: Once you are allergic to a drug, you will always be allergic to that drug and it will not just go away.

i have heavy seasonal allergies. what is a good combination of drugs to take? im on zyrtec (cetirizine) and zetonna and they are helping, but it is still bad.

Immunotherapy: Allergy shots will work much sooner than that.  We hope we achieve a "cure" in 3-5 years but symptomatic relief should begin within a few months.  We do not start grass allergy patients on shots during the grass season at our practice.
