Warning sign: It's only a problem if you recognize that you're obsessed with erotica and your sensual side to the extent that it's interfering with doing the things you must do to become / remain an effective adult. You won't injure yourself, but if this unwanted compulsion describes you, get with your physician -- a bit of rx, insight therapy, reprogramming & maybe referral will help out.

Only if....: Common sense. If you are in the grip of an obsession with erotica that's interfering with your making friends, fulfilling what you need to do as a spouse, enjoying other activities, or getting your work done, you may need a low dose of medicine and/or some insight/behavioral therapy. Otherwise, this isn't something you can do to excess -- unlike eating, drinking, or scratching, it's self-limiting.

What's excessive?: It becomes a problem if, and only if, you're so focused on enjoying your body and on human sexuality that you're missing out on other things in life that you should be doing -- being with people, learning, working. You'll know whether this is true for you. Fantasy is a dead end, while there are people around you -- perhaps without perfect bodies -- but far better for you to befriend ; maybe love.

Anything less than that may be considered normal. It may be considered unusual or outside the norm, but not bad in the medical sense.  No one has gone blind or crazy to my knowledge.

Masturbation is Safe: Most surveys suggest that the practice is quite common, especially (not surprisingly) amongst men.  There are stress relieving benefits to orgasm, and some studies have shown improved sleep.  There are no scientific concerns regarding ill effects from it.  "too much" is relative.  If your practices keep you from performing your job and other responsibilities then certainly it is too much.

Too much of anything: Too much of anything can be bad. If you ejaculate 2 or 3 times a day there will be less sperm in each then if you do it 2 or 3 times a week, but that is temporary; as soon as you reduce frequency your sperm count will rise. 
Masturbation can be a healthy release but can be detrimental if done compulsively or enough to cause irritation. If so, consider other outlets like meditation and exercise.

If can be.: If you masturbate to that point that tissues are raw, you are sore or bruised or you introduce germs by placing objects in your body - that may be harmful. Additionally if excessive masturbation prevents you from engaging in other areas of you life - that is problematic.

Yes its possible: Although masturbation in moderation is not harmful, if it is done to the exclusion of normal daily activities it can become a problem.
