is there a way to distinguish the difference between atopic dermatitis scabies and pityriasis rosea?

Yes.: Scabies is very itchy at night and affects wrists genitals nipples waist armpits. Pityriaisis rose is non contagious and involves the trunk in a christmas tree pattern and is oval with a peripheral scale.Atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that started in childhood and effects the areas in front of the elbows and behind the knees as well as the neck and face.

i was diagnosed with pityriasis rosea prescribed ointment, soothes the itching but i am starting to think i may have scabies..difference & possibility?

Pityriasis ? scabies: Pityriasis is rash thought to be caused by virus; can itch. Usual treatment is steroid cream & lubricant cream to soothe irritation. Can also take otc antihistamine like Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or zyrtec to calm itch. Scabies is parasite, usually seen a reddish, short burrows between fingers but may spread to other areas. Very itchy. Treatment is rx scabicide cream. Try zyrtec; if not better, see doc again.

my doctor is unsure whether i have pityriasis rosea or scabies. he treated me for both but none of them helped the intense itch/rash. suggestions?

Work on it: PR self heals over several months. Scabies rash and itching is due to a reaction to the poo left in tunnels in the skin by the scabies mite. It gradually improves after all the mites are dead and quit making poo. Regular OTC steroid cream can help the scabies rash and an occasional soak in cool water with oatmeal powder can aid the itching.It takes weeks for the itching of scabies to fade.

Similar appearance: The palisading variant of small-plaque parapsoriasis is particularly similar to pityriasis rosea. Several salmon-colored patches with a fine scale at the edge can occur scattered over the trunk and extremities. Large plaque parapsoriasis has larger arching appearance and is more distinct. Pityriasis rosea is more common, benign and limited to 10-20 days vs months for parapsoriasis. See derm.

Different Look: Chicken pox usually has a blister look progressing to scabs.Pr has a flatter red appearance with a symmetry of looking like an upside down xmas tree.

Fungus vs not!: Ringworm is caused by a fungus, is contagious, and is quite easily treated with topical creams. Pityriasis rosea is a non-infectious rash, not caused by a fungus, that does not yet have a distinct cause.  Although the lesions of p. Rosea are similar to ringworm, they are more widespread, and take a lot longer to go away. They also do not spread from person to person. Light therapy can help in p.R.

What causes the itch: Atopic dermatitis is an itch that rashes. Contact dermatitis is a rash that itches.  Ad is caused by an internal itch that becomes a rash only after you scratch the skin over and over again. Cd is caused by an external chemical that soaks into the skin and your immune system sends an army of cells to kill all the skin cells that are contaminated with that chemical. That irritates nerves and itches.

Yes, Interchangeable: Atopic dermatitis and eczema are usually interchangeable because they mean the same condition.  However, you could have eczema which could be localized such as nummular eczema which is not atopic dermatitis.  The term atopic is associated with allergy.  Patients with atopic dermatitis do suffer from other conditions such as asthma also.
