Overlap: Nocturnal hypoxia is a drop in oxygen in the blood when sleeping. It's associated with sleep apnea, but also with hypoxic chronic bronchitis pulmonary hypertension and emphysema.   Sleep apnea can be due to airway obstruction or of central origin. It causes reduced oxygen, often dangerously, and arousal from sleep, leading to daytime fatigue.

2 different condtion: sleep apnea is when there is a cessation of airflow with sleep and breathing. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea when the upper airway gets blocked.  Nocturnal hypoxia is a general term for low oxygen with sleep.  Sleep apnea can cause nocturnal hypoxia, though many other conditions can cause nocturnal hypoxia without sleep apnea such as copd or heart disease.

Sleep apnea: CPAP is the first line treatment and the most acceptable thing to try a first. There are many options for face masks and even nosal capp apparatuses to try.   Most people claim they get the best sleep of their lives with cpap. Give it a try before you give up on non surgical options. Good luck !

No: Apnea is cessation (stoppage) of airflow. A parasomnia is an arousal from sleep. A night terror or sleep walking are examples of a parasomnia. Treatment is different for each type of parasomnia.

good morning doctors. i have sleep apnea. can i do anything about the very frequent urination at night? is there such a thing as a cpap mask or something similar that is more portable..i am a side sleeper?

: Sleep apnea patients now can use CPAP units, dental splints, or even some newer devices.  See an otolaryngologist, who can help guide you, when you have completed an overnight sleep study to confirm sleep apnea.  Nocturnal urination may well be associated with prostate hypertrophy and this should be addressed in addition.  Contact your physician and commence these interventions.

Typical signs and symptoms are snoring, wake up gasping for air, and excessive daytime sleepiness.   Diagnosis is made by a sleep study (polysomnogram) and the main parameter of diagnosis is ahi (apnea-hypopnea index).  Mild sleep apnea ranges from 5-10 ahi.

Ask questions: Look at all your options.  There are many different types of CPAP masks for example and many patients are much happier with nasal pillow type masks instead of full nose mouth masks.  It's also a good idea to have an oral sleep apnea appliance(again there are many types) as a backup in case of power outages or head cold"s where you have a "runny or stuffed nose.

Observe: The only way to tell for sure is a sleep study.. But clues to having sleep apnea include being tired during the day, snoring, and he stops breathing during his sleep.  The risk is also bigger if he his overweight or has large tonsils.  I would suggest having him see a physician for an evaluation.
