im on hyosycamine...but it gives me constipation...is miralax (polyethylene glycol) safe to take while on hyosycamine? if not, suggestions?

Constipation tx: Your medicine will both slow, the gut and may cause loss of water from stool, both causing constipation. Miralax (polyethylene glycol) will draw water in the bowel as an osmotic agent. You may also need a push to the system. Ue fresh summertime fruits or dried fruits such as peaches, , apricots, cherries, and prunes which will solve the problem.

Miralax (polyethylene glycol): Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is an effective and generally safe laxative and if used correctly should not precipitate or worsen congestive heart failure.

Ask GI: Now MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) is otc. The original recommendation was not to use it for more that 2 weeks. There is increased risk for complications in elderly population or when mechanical obstruction has not being ruled out. Consult your gastroenterologist. Only 0.2% is absorbed. Monitor electrolytes: potassium, sodium, magnesium calcium.With prolonged use.

Laxative: Discuss this with your doctor. We usually prefer fiber and hydration to daily laxative use.

Constipation Miralax (polyethylene glycol): Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is safe in children 6 months of age and older. Start with 0.5 gm/kg in 4-8 oz fluids once daily. Can increase gradually to 1.5 gm/kg.

YEs and OTC: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is a laxative with high fiber content. Can be used daily if one has constipation problem without other GI pathology. Drink plenty of water with it. Can cause Diarrhea if used excessively. It is available OTC,does not require Rx. 
 No it does not give instant relief like enema.

I prescribe it: There are many options for constipation in pregnancy.  First involves making sure you are taking enough water and fiber in your diet.  Metamucil or fibercon can be used in addition to natural sources of fiber. Colace twice daily often helps as well.  But for those patients who don't see improvement on that regimen, either a dulcolax suppository or MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) is the next thing i typically suggest.
