is orencia (abatacept) a type of chemotherapy?

Accepted Answer

No: Orencia, or abatacept, is a medication that blocks t cells, which are part of your immune system.  Orencia is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and is given intravenously.  It can depress your immune system, but it is not the same as chemotherapy.  I would call it an immunomodulatory drug.

Cancer cells: Chemotherapy is designed to kill cancer cells, which is does quite well. There is some effect on normal cells(blood cells) yet it is much less than to cancer cells and it is temporary effect on blood cells which recover in 3-4 weeks time.. They are back to normal.

The only: Lung cancer i expect a complete response to is small cell. The next steps vary depending on what the plan was: was t given before surgery? Radiotherapy? Was the expectation that the chemotherapy was curative?  Go with him to the medical oncology visit scheduled to review the tratment plan. Treatment may be palliative. If symptoms, ask what else can be done.

Yes.: It is used in the treatment of certain types of cancer, mostly metastatic breast cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, non-hodgkin's lymphoma, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. I believe it is also used to slow the progression of multiple sclerosis.
