Edema: Edema (swelling) is associated with weight gain. Women are more prone to it and menopausal state makes it worse. Kidney disease, heart disease,  thyroid disease, side effects of drugs, varicose veins are all associated with edema. You need a detailed history, physical, urine and blood tests to determine the cause.
