Marijuana: Patients have always tried to treat themselves for medical problems, with varying levels of success.  The medical indications for marijuana are very specific.  People may smoke for recreational reasons and call it "medical." they will still be exposed to marijuana-related health issues (such as worsening asthma, potential psychosis, worsening memory and learning in some, etc).

i have always been a slim built male. since i started smoking marijuana daily i seem to have a better appetite and gaining healthy weight. is this ok?

Accepted Answer

Not really: There are many drugs/medications that have the side effect of weight gain . That doesn't mean you should be taking these either to improve your physique. I'm actually fairly liberal when it comes to medical uses for marijuana, but use for treatment of eating disorders is not one of them. You can increase your caloric intake without resorting to mind-altering drugs. And finally, what is legal?

Not good: Limited data last i checked, but consensus is that it is likely harmful. How harmful is variable and obviously depends on usage. Studies on tobacco and male fertility are sketchy but suggest around 15% reduction per conception cycle. It's not a good idea (for alot of reasons) for men when trying to conceive.

Generally not but...: If this were a common problem there would be far fewer babies born here in the santa cruz, ca area :) 
however, there is evidence that heavy marijuana use may lower sperm count somewhat and reduce the ability of sperm to fertilize eggs, but no evidence it causes "infertility" per se. But for couples experiencing fertility issues it would be wise for both partners to reduce or stop marijuana use.

Yes: Male fertility is affected by thc the psychoactive component of the marijuana.  The smoke of marijuana causes lung damage.  
Thc is felt to affect sperm in several ways including that the sperm swim too fast and "burn out" before reaching the egg, the head of the sperm has abnormal changes, the sperm count is lower.  The effect on fertility is due to the thc.

Marijuana: The use of marijuana/weed can have various effects depending on the individual variables
and what really is in the "joint" it can impact health in so many ways and its always advisable not to use to prevent any bad outcomes.

Wean off: If you have been using daily, then it is safer to wean off slowly. If you only smoked once weekly, then you can stop it cold turkey as the withdrawal symptoms  mainly occur during the first week that you are going off the chemicals.

Yes.: Cannabis use decreases secretion of testosterone, decreases desire for sex and leads to impotence and gynecomastia.  It also decreases sperm count and motility. Changes in semen  seen with heavy cannabis smoking may cause increased infertility. It is unclear if these effects are reversible. : It is likely that you will pas the test. Now that you are off the weed, stay off. Marijuana is a psychoactive drug and will mess with your brain. MJ users are called stoners for good reason. Quit using it while you are ahead.
