Yes: Once you have recovered from coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) moderate alcohol use can be part of a healthful diet. Of all the forms of alcohol examined, most research has focused on wine, and red wine in particular. Studies suggest that moderate consumption (1-3 four oz. Glasses per day) provides benefit compared to none at all. However overconsumption or binge drinking has significant risk.

No: I strongly urge you curtail alcohol consumption sharply. If not, you are asking for serious additional cardiac issues.

See cardiologist: For heart patients less than a year after bypass it's best to play it safe and see cardiologist.  Your dad at 50 is probably at higher risk since he had bypass at 50 years old.  He may be obese smoke etc.  All these risk factors can increase the risk of bypass clotting off.  He should be in cardiac rehab or nearly finished.  He should be super compliant with medications always taking aspirin.

Stop smoking...: Chances are that after bypass surgery you will not need oxygen at home.  But that being said, stopping smoking is an absolute necessity.  All the pain and suffering you will go through with the surgery will basically be wasted if you keep smoking.  Smoking will cause the bypasses to stop working much much sooner than they would in a nonsmoker.  Do your health a favor and stop before your surgery.

I : I am so sorry that your dad and your family are having to go through this.  As you know, that is an extremely major surgery.  Triple bypass with aortic valve replacement and procedure for atrial fibrillation is extremely extensive surgery.  Factors that can affect the surgery and outcome include the condition of the patient prior to surgery, age, kidney function prior to surgery, and the condition of the heart prior to surgery. Keep an open line of communication with the doctor and nursing staff so that your family's questions can be answered to your satisfaction.  I wish the best for your father.

It's bad post-op: Alcohol impairs the bodies immune system, including the white cells that eat up germs and those that make antibodies, as well as the cells (fibroblasts) that help us lay down fibrous tissue and scar.  It is also, depending on the dose, potentially toxic to the heart, weakening the heartbeat. It also impairs blood clotting, and if you are any anti-clotting agents is dangerous. Talk to your md.
