Should be okay.: when used for short periods of time, stool softeners should cause no problems. I would try to get off of them as soon as your problem is under control, however. You should be fine for the planned two weeks. In the long run, a diet high in fiber, with an increase in fluid intake also, should be helpful. Good luck.

May need surgery: If stool softeners don't help, the hemorrhoid could be thrombosed or clotted. The swelling can be very painful. You could possible have a fissure or tear and those are very painful as well. Other rx meds can possibly help or you may need surgery. See your doctor to determine the right course of therapy.

i have recently went to a doctor for hemmoroids,i received a laxative and also a stool softener because i only see them when i strain, will it go away or will i have to get help ? i work out everyday and drink 80z of water everyday also.

Hemorrhoids: Hemorrhoids are collections of tissue/veins that become inflamed and swollen. Regulating stool/ not straining will get rid of the forces causing the inflammation, allowing them to heal. (but it can take months) Symptom relief includes painkillers, ointments, creams, and pads, and can help soothe redness and swelling around the anus. If they don't resolve on their own, a Dr may consider surgery.

Removal: If the hemorrhoids subside with the treatment you are taking, well and good, if not, you may consider getting the lesions removed.

my external hemorrhoid bleeds slightly but it doesn't hurt during bowel movement so i dont use stool softeners. it just stings when i apply the ointment. it's been there for around 5 days now. how do i get the bleeding to stop?

: Sitting less and for shorter time helps to lessen the engorgement of a hemorrhoid.  Stool softeners "lubricate" the stool, while fiber helps to bulk-up the stool to retain water and encourage better propulsion through the GI system.  Bleeding is common with engorgement, straining to defecate and wiping too aggressively with rough paper.  Use soft paper and clean gently to avoid bleeding.

Yes: Will not interfere, but if you are 47 you may want to consider an in office tubal by the essure or adiana method that I do on my pts takes 5 minutes easy to do minimal to no pain miss 1/2 day of work, and then if u do not want periods you can get an in office endometrial abaltion to get rid of the endometrial tissue so no more periods or cramps takes 8 minutes easy to do.

Long time: Stool softeners can be taken safely for a long period of time, however, this should not lull you to believe that your problem may be a benign one. There are different causes of constipation and you may need to either describe your problem in greater detail or see your doctor to figure out why you are constipated.

can i take a stool softener while having an active case of diverticulitis?

Accepted Answer

It is usually: suggested that diverticulitis best to a diet which contains significant residue . Since stool "softeners"usually contain artificial "bulk" I would think it would be OK. HOWEVER I would suggest you consult with you Treating Health Care Professional before taking ANY medication which might have an effect upon your bowel condition!
