Yes: Immediately after there will be inflammation from the procedure.  Make sure to keep it clean even when it is sore.  A few days it should be gone.

Gingivectomy: As with any surgical procedure, there is the risk of post treatment swelling which peaks in the 24 to 48 hr range,  Im sure your DDS gave you post treatment instructions and guidance on what to expect

Follow instructions: I am sure your periodontist or general dentist gave you post operative instructions. However, a gingivectomy is a surgical procedure and it is not unusual for the tissue to be sore for a few days post surgery. Fortunately the tissues in the mouth heal very quickly and the soreness should subside soon. However, try to refrain from alcohol, eating hard and spicy foods. Take Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen).

i had extensive gingivectomy for some root canals for three of my bottom molars a couple years ago. noticed the other day that the gums look a bit pale pink. still pink but not the same type of pink as other areas. is this due to the surgery?

Possibly: Extensive surgery may have altered the blood flow to that area. Are you still under the care of the periodontist/endodontist who performed the surgery? It may be time for a visit to determine your gingival health.

See your dentist: This may be several things, but sounds most like a drain for an abcess, which is an outlet for pus from an infection deep in the gums or from the bone under the gums.  The infection could be due to a dead bone fragment, foreign object stuck in your tissues, gum disease, or tooth decay. To be sure, you need to see a dentist for an exam to find out what it is, why it is there, and how to treat it.

Be patient: Try to relax and practice the best oral hygiene possible and your healing should progress well.  Depending on how much gum is involved, it may take approximately 3-4  weeks.
