Residual / old blood: Not a problem. As blood ages it turns from red to brown to black.

Brown discharge: May be older, deoxygenated blood.  This may be some residual blood/tissue being shed. However if you develop discharge that has an odor, causes redness, swelling, itching or pain - please seek medical evaluation.

Yes: What you described is normal variation on menstrual cycles. Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.

Perhaps old blood: If there is no fever, odd odors and if the discharge is rather small in amount then this is likely this is just old menstrual blood that you are passing.  This happens from time to time.  Sometimes after ovulation women also have minor discharge and since your about midway during your cycle it might be that.  If this continues then you could see your physician for a history and physical.

Breakthrough: This sounds like breakthrough bleeding, and i'm sorry you're going through this. Breakthrough bleeding can be common and this brown discharge is just old blood.  Nothing to worry about, nothing with your body is necessarily wrong. If bothers you, can consider taking birth control pills to help regulate cycle. But otherwise, this is likely not to occur regularly. If it does, see a gynecolgoist.
