Yes: Normal tears are a complex mixture of fats, proteins, salts and fluid and usually will never be produced in quantity to overflow the lid.  Crying produces a lot of tears from the lacrimal gland which lack some of these components and are designed to irrigate out an irritant.  Try some artificial tears for relief after crying.

is it normal for a girl to have itchy eyes when straightening her hair?

Accepted Answer

Itchy eyes: If you are using hairspray or other chemical products to straighten your hair, you may be having an allergic response to the product. This may be affecting your eyes.  You may want to use a different hair product, and obtain some artificial tears, such as theratears or systane, to use in the eyes.  If this does not help, seek help from a local ophthalmologist.

is it normal to get red and itchy eyes when wearing contact lenses for more than 8 hours?

Accepted Answer

No: This indicates some kind of irritation due to contact lens wear or contact lens solution.  Could be dry eye, or allergies, poor fit, contact lens overwear, not cleaning properly, etc.  Check with your eye care provider for evaluation and treatment.

seems to be having allergy as spring has started. had 2 claritin 24 in the last 48 hours. however still have itchy eyes. is it normal and can i contin?

Itchy eyes: with uncontrolled allergy during a problem season, we commonly see itchy eyes for one of two reasons. Either the eyes are excessively dry due to antihistamine use, a common side effect. This is combated by adjusting the antihistamine dose or using artificial tears.  If due to allergy, the eyes are both itchy AND watering. OTC eye drops for allergy may help in this case.

i usually get a cold/flu for not more than week but this time i have been coughing, having itchy eyes, blocked nose and an uncomfortable chest feeling for about 3 weeks, is this normal?

Accepted Answer

Itchy eyes: Do not scratch your eyes, or you may suffer a corneal abrasion.  Rubbing the eyes may only make the allergic symptoms worse.  It may be better to try an allergy drop such as pataday, lastacaft, (alcaftadine) elestat, or zaditor.  Most of these medicines can be prescribed by your ophthalmologist.  Zaditor is available over-the-counter.

Cold compresses: Cold compresses and antihistamine eye drops. See your eye doctor for a recommendation on which eye drops are best for you. Using over the counter products can often lead to problems.

Fasciculations?: Not sure what you mean by vibrating. There are eyelid twitches (usually a lower lid) when your eyes are open or "fasciculations" or quivering of the upper eyelids when eyes are closed while awake. Caffeine has been implicated in both these scenarios but it could be strain of facial muscles from stress or routine gesticulations (facial expressions). Itching is usually allergy but could b other prob.

Probably allergy: If the primary symptom is itchiness, the problem is probably an environmental allergy like pollen, dust mites or animal dander.  A white, stretchy-stringy discharge is common with allergies.  If the primary symptom is a yellow or green discharge, it is probably an infection (conjunctivitis).  In adults, these infections are usually caused by cold viruses and usually resolve on their own.
