is it normal to miss a period while having paragard?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Missing periods occasionally, with or without a paragard, is perfectly normal.  To have a monthly period, you have to ovulate (release an egg).  For a variety of reasons, that may not happen every month.  The paragard, without hormones, makes no difference here.  However, if you're using Mirena (levonorgestrel) with it's Progesterone supplementation, you may find you stop having periods altogether.

Possibly: Although the IUD is very effective in preventing pregnancy, a small chance exist. Take a pregnancy test to confirm.  Pregnancy with an IUD can result in ectopic pregnancy, which can be life threatening.

Not likely.: But don't rely on one test. They are about 85-90% accurate, so the early could be off and the repeat could be off. Or you may have conceived and had a biochemical loss. I'd check again in a few days or get a blood pregnancy test.

Sometimes common: There is a broad number of reasons that your symptoms can occur.  If you are sexually active then that number increases.  Everything from endetriosis to missed period secondary to Olympic level exercise can result in missed period(s).  Also depends on how long back and stomach issues have been occurring.  See you primary care provider as soon as you are able while symptoms are still occurring.

Yes: It is common to miss or too have a light period. Birth control pills basically stop ovulation. Therefore, sometimes you can have a withdrawal bleeding and sometimes not.

Most importantly: About Lamotrigine is it's effect on folate metabolism.  If you are mthfr 677 or 1298 positive, and you doc has given you "regular" folic acid, you likely can't use it. 84% of us population has this defect. You need l-methylfolate, b6, ; B12 to keep the biochemical circle going right and supplying you with serotonin, dopamine, nor-epi ; melatonin. Mthfr also effects fertility, so important to treat.

Sometimes: Especially in low dose pills. Ok if your doctor determines no hormonal or other problem.

Yes: Any number of things including stress and exercising a lot can cause a missed period, however you may want to take a pregancy test if you have been sexually active.
