It depends: on what the source of the bleeding is, and how much blood you are seeing!  If you are over 40 or have any family history of colon cancer it might be "bad", but even young people can have problems like hemorrhoids, ulcers, fissures, diverticuli, or colon polyps.  Since I don't know your history or age, or risk factors, it is best that you see your Dr to identify the source of bleeding!

my 30 year old son says that he's seen blood in his stool for months. his poop smells really bad, not like normal feces would smell?

See a doctor: He should see his doctor. There are several reasons why a 30 year old could have blood in his stool. It cold be hemorrhoids, rectal tear, or inflammatory bowel disease to name a few. This should be evaluated and not let go.

Rectal bleeding: Rectal bleeding is not normal.  At your age group it is most likely from hemorrhoids.  Are you constipated?  If so try stool softeners and increase hydration.  If the problem persists you may need further evaluation.

See a doctor: You may have just caused some local trauma by having hard stools ( constipation), or by wiping too vigorously, causing a fissure. That will heal with gentle wiping and or changing up you diet to include more fiber, fruits and water. BUT, if there is pain with passing stool and blood, a doctor should examine the area and make sure it’s not a hemorrhoid or possibly something more serious

Bleeding: Bleeding with constipation is not uncommon. Bleeding can be due to a cut on your bottom called a fissure, or from hemorrhoids due to pushing too much. But if you are at all concerned, seek out local medical care.

See your physician.: You should be evaluated by your physician, or choose a colorectal surgeon or gastroenterologist to see.  rectal bleeding, although very common, is not normal.  There are many causes, some are harmless, some could be serious.  You really need to have a thorough evaluation by a physician .familiar with this problem.

Rectal fissure: You may have a rectal fissure caused by passing a hard stool. Try taking sitz baths several times a day and apply an anesthetic oinment to your butt. See your doctor for further help.
