HPV : Hpv is human papilloma virus.  This is the virus that causes, both simple hand and foot warts as well as genital warts and cervical cancer.  There are over 50 different strains of this virus.  The most dangerous effect of this virus is that it can lead to cervical cancer in women. We know that over 95 % of cervical cancer is caused by hpv, and that is found early, cervical cancer can be eradicated. Therefore, it is important to see you gynecologist or family doctor to have regular testing for cervical cancer (pap smears and/or dna testing for the hpv virus).  Current guidelines recommend women have cervical cancer screening exams every 1-3 years depending on a variety of variables such as age and risk factors.

Follow up: That is an infection with one of the Human Papilloma Viruses.  It will usually go away due to your own immune system in about 1 to 3 years.  If you do the recommended followup (paps, exams, colpo, etc) as recommended  by your doctor - any problems due to the virus will be detected and can be treated to prevent the development of a high grade dysplasia or a cancer.  Do your follow up.
