These are good uses of gum. Over-zealous, forceful gum chewing can cause excess wear and tear harm to the jaw joints and muscles, or can make jaw pain worse in someone with TMJ disorders.

Xylitol : Xylitol based (sugar free) will not promote tooth decay.

The chewing action stumulates salivary flow, and together with the gum, cleanses the teeth.

Obviously, too much of anything isn't healthy. Constant chewing action may put more wear and tear on the joints and muscles of the face, which could, over an extended period of time cause problems.

Everything in moderation and he should be just fine.

Jaw: I don't think that the jaw soreness is related to the canker sore.  But, cankers can occur on any type of mucocutaneous tissue.

Tooth extraction: Return to the surgeon to have the extraction site examined. You may have a piece of bone working its way out, or the area is just healing slowly and you are still feeling the edge of the extraction socket. The bad breath may be due to debris in the socket, or from other areas of your mouth.
In any case, you should be seeing your dentist for follow-up care.

my jaws hurt when i chew hard food and gum is it because i have a bad tooth in my mouth why my ear and neck hurt more on that right side please?

Get it checked: If your jaw is hurting on one side it could mean you have a bad tooth referring pain to your jaw and you could have a responding swollen/sore lymph node in your neck. Or if your clenching your jaw at night it could make your jaw hurt. Can involve cheek and neck muscles as well. Have dds check for infection on the affected side and have him check for signs of night clenching/grinding. Good luck.

Infection?: Your symptoms could be from a dental or medical problem or even both.  Swelling and fever are generally signs of an infection.  I strongly recommend that you see a dentist as soon as possible for a complete and thorough examination and evaluation.  Untreated infections can spread quickly and result in serious complications.

Infection: You may have a severe infection of tooth/teeth, gums, underlying bone, etc.  You must seek treatment immediately as infection seems to be spreading.  Call your Dentist for an emergency appointment, and do it now.
