Which ones?: It's very difficult to answer broad open ended questions. Let's assume that you're referring to prescription acne medications. By definition, all have to effective to be approved by FDA for use in States. There has to be some level of safety too. However, some are safer than others. For instance, isotretinoin is safe for female but poses significant birth defect risk. Over-the-counter non-prescrpt

Acne: It depends on many factors and what you are trying to treat. Please see your dermatologist to have an initial evaluation, especially since I don't think you are 41 and just experiencing Acne. You are likely a very young minor to whom we cannot not offer medical advice.

Yes: Doxycycline works 2 ways- it reduces the bacterial load and the inflammation associated with acne. It is not for everyone and there are some side effects, so adequate monitoring by your physician is key.

About any: Any combination estrogen / progestin oral contraceptive pill will have about the same effect in suppressing acne. The two you note would fall into that category.  If the pill does not have the desired effect then see a dermatologist for evaluation and treatment.

are birth control pills taken for acne like estelle 35-ed/diane 35-ed just as effective for birth control as other combination pills ?

Yes: It's perfectly effective as a birth control due to the estrogen. The main difference is that the other hormone is typically a Progesterone in other combination pills. The second hormone in Estelle-35ED is an anti-androgen hormone called cyproterone acetate which decreases the level of androgens you are exposed to/able to respond to and thereby decreasing oily skin and acne.

No problem: Isotretinoin does not decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraception.  In fact, women who are going to take Isotretinoin should use some form of hormonal contraception so that they don't get pregnant while on the drug or they need to abstain from all forms of sexual activity.

i'm on aviane birth control pills and also taking doxycycline for my acne. how much less effective does doxycycline make my birth control? i'm nervous

Antibiotic Guideline: Some physicians will have different opinions but if you look at the evidence and guidelines, the only antibiotic known to affect birth control efficacy is rifampin. Doxycycline should be just fine.

Yes: The herbals and supplements will disappoint you. Your physician has antibiotics for the milder cases and can refer you for isotretinoin; the latter is not cheap, pleasant or risk-free but is very effective. The oral contraceptive pill can end acne if you're a lady who can take it. Spironolactone is the other agent that folks sometimes forget.

Modern times: Tay, this is the 21st century. If topical benzoyl peroxide and perhaps a topical retinoic acid derivate have not helped, then please consider adding topical clindamycin. And tay, your taxes have gone into the development of powerful and safe medications. The "pills" you don't like have (with other good things) made our world far healthier than the one into which i was born. Use if needed.
