i am having black dots or small specks when i cough not all times but only sometimes. once i did find a speck of blood it was very small so i am not sure. is it serious? no other symptoms?

: I would be concerned about being exposed to some pollution in your environment. Have your physician examine you and advise you. I would also recommend having a chest X-Ray.

Possibly...: Hemoptysis, coughing blood, always needs to be evaluated by a doctor. The usual etiology is bronchitis ( including from tb, if other symptoms present) but malignancy can cause this as well so it needs a doctor evaluation asap. If you are short of breath, you should go to nearest er as this can be life-threatening. Good luck!

this morning and had a small cough and some (very little) dark blood came out. i have had sinus headache for a couple days. could this be serious?

Yes: You should probably see a doctor asap, since sinus infections (if that is what you have) can morph into severe complications, but you might first try sinus irrigation (netti-pot), and decongestant.  When you go to the doctor have a list prepared of all the things which have happened and trust they will work things out for you. Do not know if this is serious without seeing you.

: Get evaluated/ One form of chronic lung condition is cough variant asthma, which often appears in young kids as recurrent bronchitis. Simple studies can confirm or exclude this as a problem. Proper diagnosis can lead to appropriate simple treatments that can make life much easier/enjoyable.

Bronchitis or Nose: Bronchitis is usually the most common cause of coughing up blood (hemoptysis).  However, they may also have a small bleed at the back of their nose, which is dripping down their throat and subsequently being coughed up.  The most common cause of nose bleeds in children is what we call "digital trauma, " a.K.A. Nose picking.

Amount/duration: The source of the bleeding may be the nasal passages, since the infection and inflammation make the nose prone to minor bleeding. If the blood seems to be from the bronchi or airway, similarly this may be a result of minor vessel bleeding. If the amount is more than minor or is associated with shortness of breath, please see the emergency department.  Gentle nasal saline rinses may be helpful.
