i was told by a gastroenterologist that soluble fiber would help my symptoms for ibs. would benefiber be a good choice? the kind you mix in drinks?

Yes: Benefiber can be a good choice for obtaining more soluble fiber in the diet as an attempt to treat IBS. It is generally better to begin slowly and gradually increase the amount of fiber supplementation over the course of weeks to months. It is also important to increase your fluid intake when you increase your fiber. This works in some patients with IBS. Good luck.

my dr told me 2 take benefiber daily.  i found fiber oral capsules were cheaper & easier to consume.  fiber caps r made of psyllium. which better &why?

Benefiber may be: easier to take. The powder in a can format is easier and cheaper than capsules and you'll get a larger dose which which will help make you regular. Psyllium works well too and is a bulk laxative, and helps moves things through. It s a matter of preference. It also comes as loose powder.

good morning doctors! among konsyl, benefiber, metamucil, which do recommend as best (for fiber and occasional constipation)?

Citrucel: Citrucel is a non absorbable fiber and will not cause gas like bran. I recommend this first, and incorporate laxative foods like senna fruits (peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, cherries into your diet. Consider baking oat/wheat bran muffins as alternative to buying bran products. Much tastier!

i see that benifiber has on 5gs of dietary fiber per 2 tsb, how much of this do i need a day?

24 grams plus: You need a lot more fiber than that - but it is suppose to supplement - Please note that five servings of fruits and vegetables are an important part of your diet. One serving of vegetables is about half a cup. Add some whole apples, whole oranges, as well as some leafy green vegetables (brocoli, bok choi, asparagus, green beans) to your diet.

Probably: There is a Benefiber product especially designed for children which simply has the wheat dextrin in it (still considered gluten free) without additional ingredients or supplements. It could be added to a child's food/beverage safely, I believe. However, I suggest increasing fiber in the child's diet would be a better initial approach. Good luck!

Yes: Hi. You bet! And most Americans need more fiber. You can get fiber from the appropriate food sources, but many of them also have digestible carbohydrates/sugars. Benefiber has no digestible carbohydrates/sugars, so would be fine in a low glycemic index diet.

can benefiber chewables cause a different color in stools?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes: Benefiber can sometimes trap bile acids.  A variation in the amount of bile acids in your stool can cause a change in the color.  It is not dangerous, and the benefits of fiber far outweigh any psychological concerns about what color your stools are!

i'm doing the optifast diet and i'm in week 2. everything is great except constant diarrhea. i've also been taking benefiber once a day. advice?

Wt loss is water wt: That is not sustainable weight loss and it can mess up your electrolytes and cause you serious harm! That is like wringing out a water soaked towel and saying "See how much lighter it is!" As soon as you start eating normally again the water will return as will your frustration and anger with your latest fad diet. As has been said in another context "There is no Royal road to geometry."
