i have ibs. is it safe to take methylcellulose everyday? if not, can you recommend a daily fiber supplement that is safe for chronic use?

IBS: If you have IBS and tolerate fiber supplements well you should be able to continue methylcellulose as a daily maintenance supplement. Metamucil is also helpful in many patients with either constipation or diarrhea prone IBS. A gastroenterologist can evaluate and advise you best if you have further concerns.

Most do, because...: Some of the fiber is not digested, but fermented by bacteria that normally live in the gut..Insoluble fiber, like in wheat bran, may be less gassy than soluble fiber, like in oats. Other products such as polyethylene glycol, miralax, may be less gassy.

i just found out i have gall stones. should i stop taking fiber supplements for my ibs? the stones aren't blocking anything at the moment.

Irritable Bowel: Yes it is quite possible. Would recommend regular exercise, adequate water intake, minimize caffeine and alcohol. Diet rich in fibers. Breathing exercises and destressing also helps. If no help please consult a gastroenterologist for further assessment.

Retraining: Give him MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) every night before bedtime to the point of inducing a diarrhea.Put him on the potty every morning and as he catches on cut back on the miralax (polyethylene glycol). There will be accidents along the way and it will take time. Rewards for success is also helpful.

Fiber supplements: none are "good" to use if by good you mean they have been proven by proper trials to make what is bothering you better. Or make you live longer or healthier.

Xylitol : Is a sugar alcohol, or artificial sugar. It's not fiber. It acts as an osmotic laxative, but has significant side effects of bloating and gas. Look for citrucel or Metamucil.
