Usually but depends: on what damage the smoking has already done. In some smokers, the vocal cords become scarred or develop nodules and hoarseness may persist.  Most of the time it is chronic inflammation and this heals, with time. It will also depend on how long and how much you smoked, what kind of cigarettes, and your own biology and predisposition to smoking-related damage. Congratulations and stay quit!!!

Smoking: Smoke can paralyze the cilia that beat gunk from the airways out of our body. When you stop smoking they can become active again and start to move gunk out. Please hydrate well. Congratulations on decision to stop smoking.

i had laryngitis and now almost 3 weeks later, i am still hoarse. i quit smoking 1 month ago. i'm worried this is something serious. is this normal?

Laryngitis: Congrats on quitting smoking.  Stay w/your doc until you are feeling better.  Do not let this be a conscious or subconscious excuse for you to start smoking again.  Peace and good health.

Healing after Cigs..: I would first tell him a hearty congratulations.  And, second give my opinion that no this is not a permanent change.  When one is smoking the natural anti-inflammatory part of healing does not work well in the tissues of the throat and trachea.  It can take several months after stopping smoking to clean out all of the tar and toxic stuff in the lungs to get to normal. But, he is on his way!

i am a singer who quit smoking 2 months ago. i am hoarse in my lower register. ent 5 months ago said nothing wrong. neck muscles sore & ear blocked. ?

See ENT again: 5 months is a long time, and if your symptoms have persisted, I think another consultation is needed. Did the ENT doctor directly visualize your vocal cords before saying there was nothing wrong?  I think another look is warranted.

since i quit smoking, i feel dazed and unable to concentrate. is this normal?

Depends: Nicotine withdrawal starts within 12 hours, peaks in 48 hours andseems to take up to a few weeeks to  resolve.  These symptoms are normal when in this time frame.

i think my allergies have gotten worse since i quit smoking. is this normal?

No: I have come across some patients tell me this and there are some anecdotal cases of this happening. The only explanation that i can think of is that the the nicotine in cigarette smoke is a vasoconstrictor and keeps the congestion in the nasal passages at bay. When its effect wears off there may be some nasal congestion. I don't think this long lasting.

is it normal for someone who just quit smoking to be wheezing and coughing uncontrollably?

Yes: You could already developed emphysma. Have spirometry or even better pulmonary funntions test with abgs.

Congratulations on: becoming smoke free!  The urges you have may be a way of distracting you from the bloating and dizziness you mention. Stay w/doc until they are resolved.  Smoking and coffee drinking can be psychological permissions to be "off duty."
