Too early: The heartbeat is created by the sound of valves closing against pressure. At 5 weeks a babies heart is still forming & consists of incomplete upper & lower chambers with no valves. By 8 weeks there are valves, but their closure does not generate enough sound to be detected by most methods.

Early: Depends how the ultrasound is performed (through the vagina, or through the abdomen).  Through the vagina, you can possibly see it by 4 weeks, but must see it by 7-8 weeks.

May need to do trans: Vaginal scan, can see a ht beta on transvaginal scan at 6 weeks sometimes definitely by 7 weeks.

6w1d (lmp 6/21). brown spotting on 7/30. transvaginal us on7/31 sawyolk sac, no heartbeat.  dr saidi'd miscarry. is it too early to say itisn't viable?

Slightly possible: At 6 weeks and 1 day we would expect to see a fetal heartbeat over 97% of the time.  That means there is a very, very slight chance that the pregnancy could progress and be normal. It would be appropriate to repeat the TVS to reevaluate the pregnancy in another week.  Serial quantitative hCG tests could help to illuminate the status of the pregnancy as well.

1st ultrasound i measured 4wks 6 days. 13 days later i only measured 6 weeks 1 day. there was a fetal pole, but no heart beat. should i worry about possible miscarriage or could i just be to early for heartbeat. i go back in 7 days for another us. ?

Scanning so early...: One's Ob-Gyn doctor can help with such concerns because normally women don't need to get scanned so early. Perhaps this is a special situation, which is why one's doctor can help with this. In general, many early pregnancies miscarry as a normal part of human life. The early embryos that progress successfully on their own... those are the ones that become babies.

don't usually drink coffee v early in the morn. but today after drinkin coffee at 530am. shortly after i had irregular heartbeats ? should i worry? ty

Caffeine: Caffeine in coffee can cause extrasystoles in some people. Usually it is not a problem.

No: it's not  too early. Many women have no morning sickness at all. FHR of 171 and measuring +/- 1 day is very good news, don't worry.

5.5-6.5 wks: Is when the fetal heart beat can be detected. Maybe you are not as far along as you thought. Maybe check again in 2 weeks.
