i was diagnosed with pulmonary embolism 2019 october was on blood thinners until august 2020. my physician stopped me from them because i was loosing a lot of blood when on my periods therefore prescribed iron supplements,and other medication.

Anemia: Temporary stops in her medication regimen may be necessary to avoid severe anemia. The blood thinners are important and will most probably be restarted once she recover from her anemia. Recurrent blood clots can be dangerous so have her avoid sitting for long periods of time, drink lots of fluids, avoid tight fitting clothes and exercise daily.

can the brand nature made , iron supplements mess with birth control? on the back it says can mess with some medications .

No: An iron supplement will not affect the effectiveness of the birth control pill.

See below: Iron sulfate and iron fumerate are the more commonly prescribed iron pills. The fumerate compounds are more easily absorbed and are more easy on the GI tract.

Yes: Getting a repeat blood test to look at anemia can be helpful to decide if you should continue to take iron tablets.

Yes: And it can be fatal.  You do not need iron supplements unless you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency.

can you overdose on iron supplements when you have low ferritin? what is the optimal dose of iron to take to raise ferritin significantly?

Accepted Answer

No: The gut is very inefficient at absorbing iron. So you really cannot take too much.  Oral replacement takes several weeks.  In a more pressing circumstance your doc could offer IV iron.

should iron supplements be stopped while on coumadin (warfarin)?

Accepted Answer

No: There is no interaction between iron and warfarin.  You should only be on iron if you are iron deficient,  common causes of iron deficiency are gastrointestinal blood loss from colon polyps, inflammation, tumors or other problems.  Warfarin may increase the blood loss from any of these causes.  If you are iron deficient, the cause needs to be determined, especially for someone on warfarin.
