i have very low iron my doctor did give me iron supplements but my #'s weren't really going up so i started iron infusion. ?

On the right track: We detect, confirm and follow iron deficiency anemia by Ferritin levels. Your doctor will do that for you. Most importantly why are you iron-deficient? Are you losing blood? from where? Is it from the gastrointestinal tract or during menstruation? Thank you for asking.

i have iron level of 17 ug/dl and iron binding saturation of 4%. is it too low to go for iron infusion? can i take oral iron supplements which would increase these numbers (slowly)? i am an active person with healthy diet (mostly vegetarian)?

: You have significant iron deficiency by those numbers. IV iron is NOT absolutely indicated unless you could not tolerate oral iron or ongoing blood loss is still present and you need a quick way to replete your iron storage with on going iron loss in case of moderate &amp; severe anemia. There are plenty of means for repleting iron orally by meds and high iron contained foods so IV iron is unnecessary

Yes: Hemotolgy doctors will do intravenous iron infussions in the chemo centers.  Just a small needle stick and wait for the medicine to slowly drip in.  Will not hurt me a bit.

good day, i am anemic and my body is not responding to iron supplements. i received an iron infusion in april 2018 and july 2019. my obgyn has recommended a mirena to deal with the blood loss through menstruation.  i am worried about the side effects?

Mirena: Some possible Mirena side effects: headache, missed periods, bleeding btwn periods, abdominal or pelvic cramping/ pain, nausea, vomiting, bloating, weight gain, ovarian cysts, breast tenderness, acne as well as uterine perforation &amp; ectopic pregnancy.

last year my iron level was a 7 and i i was advised to take iron supplements as soon as possible it s been a year now should i go and get myself tested again ?

Yes: Getting a repeat blood test to look at anemia can be helpful to decide if you should continue to take iron tablets.

why does my natures bounty iron supplements smell like vinegar? the target brand of iron i usually get never has any smell. the expiration date is 2023?

: Suggest you contact the store where purchased, and ask the local pharmacist if present, why there is an aroma to your supplements.  Alternatively, you could contact manufacturer via phone, email, or snail mail.

If abused: You have to really overdo iron supplements and probably have a genetic predisposition, but you might be able to give yourself the gray-bronze of iron overload / hemochromatosis. You don't want this; it'll ruin everything from your liver to your love life.

Accepted Answer

No: Iron supplements do not make a person fat. However, if a person takes iron pills with a big glass of orange juice, whole milk, or a smoothie, then "taking iron pills" could make him fatter. Some people get constipated when taking iron pills. Constipation can make one look fatter due to the extra poop staying in the abdomen.

Depends: Some iron supplements can be harsh on your system and encourage free radical oxidative damage. However, this should not really cause noticeable fatigue. Consider looking into other causes as well.
