i am allergic to shrimp but can eat crab and fish. i am also allergic to seaweed. also very allergic to iodine swab on skin. can i take fish oil??

Relative....: People who have allergies to shellfish or fish have a relative contraindication to taking fish oil supplements and they should proceed with caution when considering taking them.

Allergy testing: It is unusual to be able to eat crabs and seafood with such a strong history of iodine and multiple seafood allergies.  I would not recommend fish oil at this time.  If you are depressed, there are medications and counseling that can help - see your Doctor.  If you have not been evaluated for specific food allergies, seeing an Allergist for testing is advised.

i had iodine constant 6 years ago and it nearly killed me. i want to take prenatal vitamins. am i allergic to fish oil because of the iodine allergy?

Folate: Take folate, iron and calcium separately instead of a prenatal vitamin. Folate is most important since it protects from certain birth defects. in fact some obstetricians recommend folate alone instead of prenatal vitamins if you are healthy and have a good diet.

Iodine allergy: It is a myth that iodine allergy is related to shellfish allergy. Shell fish can contain high amounts of iodine however, allergy to shrimp is typically due to allergic antibodies formed against a shrimp muscle protein called tropomyosin.

Yes: It is very unlikely that you have iodine poisoning from seafood. Drink enough water so that your urine is clear, colorless and odorless, i.e., watery. It will not do any harm, if it makes you feel better, it will be worth it.

Ocean predators: Avoid eating large predator fish.  Marine life often is not able to excrete heavy metals and other toxins they absorb through pollutants.  Through the processes of bioaccumulation & biomagnification, methylmercury levels grow higher is large ocean predators.  Consider eating fish that are lower on the food chain or fish from streams and rivers.

NOT really: Sodium content of saltwaterr fish vs. Fish water fish is apron.  Equal. Shellfish ( clam, oysters) and crucateans (crabs, shrimp lobsters) has 3-4 x  the sodium per dry weight. Unless the fish is pickled (like herring) or actually slated there should be not restriction in a weight builders diet.
