Normal process: When women ovulate every month, the ovary produces an egg to be released for fertilization. The egg is released from a cyst on the ovary. If that egg is fertilized, that cyst remains to support the early stages of pregnancy. If there is no pregnancy, this cyst 'involutes'/resolves, i.e., gets reabsorbed by the body.

No: Small ovarian cysts usually collapse ( involute) and go away on their own. This is your immune system doing its job.Follow up with your doctor as they suggest and alert them to any new symptoms but don't worry. Worry suppresses your immune system and slows healing.

Cyst is going away: That means the cyst is resolving, it can be followed by ultrasound to make sure it resolves, i encourage you to make your doctor explain something when you do not understand it, i always do this with my patients but surprised that many docs do not.

Collapsing: imagine a ball that is slowly getting deflated, it is possible that you had a follicle or developing egg that ruptured and is now leaking the usual fluids that it creates to support the egg while it is growing.is this can be a normal event, sometimes associated with some cramping and bloating. Nothing to worry about unless symptoms get worse.

Common: A  functional ovarian cyst is a simple cyst that is normal development  from ovulation. In most cases it resolves on it's on and doesn't create any problems.

Depends on the cyst: Some cysts (small simple follicular) don't need any help and resolve on their own. Large symptomatic cysts most likely will require surgical intevention. There are some cysts that resolve with hormonal treatment.

If twisted, yes: If the ovarian cyst is large enough to twist on its pedicle(attachment) and cut off its' blood supply then the pain will be constant and "excruciating" necessitating a Emergency Room visit for surgery.
