Depends on lifestyle: The risk of aquiring an infection depends on the donor's health condition, and what behaviors he/she engaged in.  This is why people are screened before they donate blood.  They are checked for temperature, amount of iron, asked questions about general health, and have blood pressure taken.  The blood is even screened after donation for things like hiv.  Anyone with higher risk cannot donate.

You need a WORKUP: If you can go about your daily business, you don't need to be transfused, but I am VERY concerned that you have an unexplained anemia. Even at your age, it's a bleeding stomach ulcer or GI cancer until proved otherwise. Your physician needs to take a good history, including pregnancies / monthly loss. If you're a vegetarian and not supplementing, you'll need to start. Look for treatable disease.

I guess becuase the : Incomplete transfusion didn't work. In all seriousness I am not sure of the question.  If you wan to know when would "whole blood" be used for transfusion, the answer is never with modern blood banking.  If you are asking when would a red blood cell exchange transfusion be done, a good example would be in a sickle cell anemia patient before a major operation.

Be a healthy adult.: You will be asked questions to be sure you are healthy, have not engaged in behaviors associated with viral illnesses like hepatitis or hiv, are not taking problematic medications and have not traveled to areas where malaria & other blood borne diseases are common.  You have to have normal blood pressure and pass a blood test to be sure you are not anemic.
