i am an avid weightlifter for 28-years. i was just diagnosed with a left side intercostal muscle strain. the pain is tremendous. it is day 7 of this pain. any advice on medicine and/or physical therapy that i can do at home to help heal the injury?

Answeredyesterday: You must be examined. You will need a chest x-ray and physicial exam. You will need antiinflammatory/pain mediciation and figure on 2-4 weeks for  this to begin: sound like a torn intercostal muscle with nerve exposure causing severe intercostal neuritis and cosochonditis.

It depend: If the muscle torn from certain spot it may need surgical repair, other wise will treated with rest and pain medications'.

Gastroc: If the tear is mid alf or higher (muscle), treatment is conservative. Ice, light compression wrap, optional boot for immobilization, stretching, & weight bearing as tolerated. Light exercises such as stationary biking is ok. Some have used prp injections. If the tear is in the achilles' tendon you likely need surgery to repair it.

Yes: It's not uncommon to strain or partially tear an intercostal muscle while coughing . Rest and time should heal this. If pain persists, see your physician.

Hard to say: Rib problems can cause a lot of pain for a long time and can cause spasms. This is expected. See your MD for evaluation and meds If needed. If still concerned, additional imaging might be needed.  Ibuprofen and a muscle relaxant might help

Depends: The extent of the tear, your ability to rest and stretch the injured area, and the type of work you are returning to are important factors your doctor will have to consider.   If medications and rest aren't making a difference yet, seek the help of a physiatrist (pm&r)  to upgrade your therapy with modalities that speed circulation and healing.

Depends: Injury to the diaphragm is not feasible unless there is systemic muscle disease. Intercostal muscle could be injured as part of a bruise and would heal like a bruise.

Injuries: I don't know what kind of diaphragm injury you had, but rib cage injury, even rib fracture, usually heals by 3 months. Perhaps you should consult a thoracic surgeon to obtain an accurate diagnosis. &amp;. appropriate treatment.

i am carrying excess weight around the girth area and i find when i need to bend to the left or right i suffer with severe intercostal muscle spasms.

Excess weight: The obvious solution is to take off at least ten pounds
