what can be done to minimize the pain of folley catheter insertion and removal?  i recall this experience as the most unbearably painful event.

Folley: I fully understand your concern. A Lidocaine gel can be used during insertion to help minimize the discomfort. Removal is not as painful as insertion is. A pill of Ibuprofen or Naproxen prior to that may help numb up the experience.

Accepted Answer

No: But there may be inflammation, strictures, or other diseases in the lower urinary tract that can bleed.  Also more likely to have hematuria if patient is taking a blood thinner, ie aspirin, plavix, coumadin, (warfarin) etc.  The catheter also may not be a good fit or well lubricated for insertion.

See below: A dialysis catheter is a conduit to access either the blood stream or the peritoneal cavity to enable to performance of dialysis.
Hemodialysis catheters can be acute or temporary or chronic and in that case tunnelled under the skin. Peritoneal catheters are always tunnelled and enter the abdominal wall. Insertion is done with local anesthesia under ultrasound guidance or surgically.

Catheters: Depends on why the catheter was inserted, whether it is still in place and numerous other factors , including gender.   Unlikely to be a highly significant problem, but recommend you discuss it with the physician who placed the catheter.

Extreme but doable: Sedation for urinary catheterization is a bit extreme but if absoultely necessary could be done.

Medical Norms: This is something out of the ordinary. Did the catheter go in your bladder?  If so then bleeding post catheter is coming from your urinary tract and not your uterus and would be considered expected and normal.

is it safe to use  benzocaine gel before insertion of a foley catheter?

Accepted Answer

Yes: There is a Lidocaine jelly which can be used intraurethrally prior to insertion of a Foley catheter or cystoscopic procedure done under local anesthesia.  The comfort level of the patient is noticeably better with the injection of the jelly into the urethra, placement of a penile clamp for men, and waiting 5 minutes prior to insertion of the Foley or cystoscope.

i had no pain with saline us,only thing i felt was initial insertion of catheter. will i feel same with mini hysteroscopy? will i feel polyp removal?

See Below: The hysteroscopy causes a bit more cramping than a saline infusion ultrasound but its still bearable.  Polyps don't usually have any nerves in them so you shouldn't feel much when the polyp is removed.  Best wishes!

hi, i just had a catheter ablation procedure 2 days ago and have discovered a small lump near the insertion site in my groin. any suggestions?

Accepted Answer

Yes: May just be a bruise if hard but not pulsating.  Safest thing though is to get it checked urgently by a doctor if any doubts as occasionally the artery where they have gone in can create an aneurysm but a doctor examination will likely help sort that out for you

Bruises from cath: There is bruising associated with the manipulation of the catheter that can continue to make its way to the surface for days after the fact. Do not be alarmed.
