URGENT DOCTOR VISIT: Inflammatory breast cancer is a breast cancer emergency. You need to see a doctor and medical oncologist very quickly if you suspect this diagnosis. I always try to see patients with possible inflammatory breast cancer the same day. A skin biopsy can be done immediately if the suspicion is high. Treatment always starts with chemotherapy, not surgery. Please go to an ER or doctor now!

Usually no pain: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) usually is diffuse swelling, enlargement, heaviness, redness, and skin swelling.  Pain is rare in breast cancer, unless it is so advanced that it has eroded out through the skin, or eating into the underlying muscles.  By that time, there is an obvious large hard mass.

Lobular breast cancer can show up like this, however, and I strongly urge you to see a dr soon!

Aggressive Cancer: Ibc is an aggressive type of breast cancer that grows very rapidly and invades the lymphatics of the skin of the breast, giving the appearance of a breast infection;  the breast is often red, swollen, tender, with a rash.  By definition, cancer cells have gone 'elsewhere' at diagnosis; therefore, chemotherapy is given first, followed by mastectomy, and then radiation therapy.
