i have diabetes, can a rotavirus infection cause complications?

Accepted Answer

Yes.: Any infection can cause uncontrolled sugar swings.  If you use a glucometer to check your sugars, you might want to be extra vigilant when you are ill.  Also, be wary of dehydration with rotavirus, which can be compounded if your diabetes was not under control (a high blood sugar will cause you to urinate more).  Good luck and have a low threshold for getting checked out by your physician!

Yes: Depending on the intensity of the illness, lyme disease as will most other infections, cause a change in your baseline Insulin needs. Some who are recognised early & treated may not see more than a minimal effect. However, unrecognised illness can be quite destabalizing for the long haul.

i have crohn's disease, can a rotavirus infection cause complications?

Probably not: Rotavirus commonly affects young children rather than adults & causes watery diarrhea that usually goes away on its own in a few days.You may be able to get rotavirus if you are taking meds for crohns (they suppress your immune system & make it harder to fight off infections). It should not cause any long term complications. Drink plenty of fluids with electrolytes (ex gatorade) & see dr if needed.

i'm hospitalized for kidney infection, and on oxygen as blood saturation is around 80, normally 97-99. could my infection or complications cause this?

Sounds like: Severe vitamin b1 deficiency. This vitamin has an important part in picking up oxygen from the lung and delivering it to the tissues. Ask for a venous oxygen level and if it is high, it means that oxidation (use of oxygen by the tissues) is also poor and is characteristic of b1 def.

i have irritable bowel syndrome.  will a clostridium difficile infection cause complications?

Maybe: Ibs patients not at any greater risk for complications from c. Diff.
C. Diff infection commonest after exposure to antibiotics (any, even for short periods, and up to 2-3 months after exposure), hospitalization, nursing homes, ibd, chemotherapy.
Can cause watery diarrheal illness, all the way to life threatening complications.
Any question, see your doc.  Get stool testing.

having recurrent fungal ear infections since 2/2021. i go to the ent every time. given acetic drops/ ofloxacin/antibios each time. now i have chronic sinusitis, is this the cause? can recurrent infections cause complications like meningitis? scared.?

: I've never seen it, but chronic untreated sinusitis can cause meningitis. You should be in good hands as you're being treated and followed by an ENT specialist. However I recommend having a complete medical examination including appropriate lab work because of your recurrent fungal infections and chronic sinusitis.

can cytomegalovirus infections cause complication in my pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Many have had CMV long before they ever become pregnant and are thus immune. Exposure to CMV during pregnancy would not be a problem. If you have it for the first time during pregnancy, the baby gets it too and the effect varies with the timing. It could cause miscarriage, generalized fetal infection and brain damage. In milder cased it can cause severe hearing loss.

Unlikely: When you say yeast infection are you referring to vaginitis? If so ,it is very unlikely indeed that it will spread or involve other parts of the body. 
Antibiotics, Steroids, Diabetes, these are risk factors. Even severe cases are usually cured by treatment with fluconazole tablets up to two weeks in the most severe cases.

: A large meta-analysis study reported in the spring 2021 revealed that after adjusting for multiple variables, COVID-19 patients treated with ACE inhibitors and ARBs had a significantly lower risk of death and severe adverse events, which include the need for intubation, mechanical ventilation, or admission to the ICU, when compared with those not receiving such meds.
