Possibly both: It is exceedingly hard to determine if a post-operative infection spares any prosthetic material that was implanted, including mesh; if the infection approaches the material, we assume it is infected. Due to the risk of treatment failure if infected foreign material is left in place, it is generally recommended by id to remove any prosthetic material in these situations.

Depends: It depends on the type of repair and the specific location of the infection within the abdominal wall. If mesh or permanent sutures were used, AND are involved in the infection, they may need to be removed. If the infection is only in the skin (no pus, red skin only), then antibiotics may suffice. Best to get an evaluation from your surgeon. You can also ask for a second opinion if warranted.

Clinical exam: You had an open hernia repair and are concerned for nerve entrapment.  You want to know if MRI will help in diagnosis.  Most surgeons will examnine you and take a history.  They may refer you to a pain specialist to block the area and get rid of the pain.  It can usually be controlled this way but does have a risk of causing over sensitivity. In this region.  Follow with your surgeon.

in hernia they are using a screen routinely now, which is a foreign body and that does not like infection at all, some time it could be a sign of rejection of the screen.
