Mongolian spots are common among darker skinned persons, such as those who are of asian, east indian, and african descent. They can be mistaken for bruises. They often fade with time and are usually gone by late the teen years. They cause no complications and do not need treatment.

Be patient: Mongolian spots fade by themselves over the years. If they are deep and dark at birth it may take until the teen years(as it did in my son's case, who looked like somebody had poured a bottle of blue ink on his back at birth!). Just don't pay attention to it and don't make the child be self-conscious about it. If it is a highly visible place, i suppose you can apply some cover up cream...

Over time those cells spread out and the slate grey patch gets lighter as the baby's over all skin tone gets darker. Maybe not: A Mongolian patch/spot is composed of cells that make more melanin pigment in the skin. These are present from the time the skin forms and persist through life. They can fade some as the skin thickens or persist &amp; darken. They can be covered, but there is no simple treatment.
