hi, my wife went to the er yesterday because she wasn't feeling our baby move a lot....she is almost 32 weeks, when we got there they discovered she was having contractions every 3-7 minutes....her cervix seemed closed and the preterm labor test came?

Happens in pregnancy: quite common occurrence. You can have contractions without cervical dilation and thats ok. If the cervix starts to shorten or dilate, you may need steroids to help boost the babies lungs/brain etc. For now, lots of hydration and rest at home

No: Cramping in early pregnancy is not normal.  If you are having bleeding associated with it you are at risk for miscarriage.  See your doctor if it persists.  Take care!

Seriously, I don't : Think of any serious problems unless there's serious persistent symptoms like weight loss, loss of appetite, bleeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation etc.Get checked for problems with uterus, ovaries, intestines, bladder etc. Best wishes!

Not necessarily: Contractions are just cramping of the muscle. The uterus may contract when a woman is not pregnant - menstrual cramps are "contractions" of the uterine muscle. In addition, a female orgasm is accompanied by uterine contractions. However, some rhythmic pains in the lower abdomen may be the result of intestinal or ovarian pain. If these persist, you should see your doctor.

5 min apart : If you are consistently having regular contractions over time then you should be seen in labor and delivery to be evaluated for preterm labor.

Get pregnancy test: Check a pregnancy test first. If negative, constipation is a common reason for "contraction" like pain (especially in your left lower abdomen). Also, bladder infections, kidney, stomach / bowel problems (aka gastroenteritis). If you are having fever or your pain is worsening, go to the nearest ER.

Need to be seen: If you are contracting 5 min apart for over an hour you need to go to labor and delivery now to be evaluated.

Yes, definitely: The question is.... Are the contractions strong enough to cause labor?  If they are 5 minutes apart and taking your breath away, then you should probably go to the hospital. If you can breathe through them without difficulty and they are just kind of in the background, likely just braxton hicks.  Contractions such as this can go on for weeks before true labor.  If worried, always go to l;d.

Get checked: Depnding on how frequent your contractions are it could be false labor or premature labor. Please see your doctor as soon as possible if you are having contractions.

Please ask again: What? There are a number of type of contractions, such as how the colon moves stool through to the anus or how the clitoris or penis stimulation with orgasm.  Uterine contractions when in labor are felt by pregnant females only.
