For either, some labs automatically determine virus type, but others need a request from the doctor or patient to test for HSV1 vs HSV2. It's not only possible to get herpes from someone who doesn't know they have it, this actually is the most common situation. If partner has an oral outbreak, it can be tested. Otherwise an HSV blood test.

Also the person that you are doing this with -what is his herpes status? All these factors come into play. Nothing however is for sure. The chances of spreading oral herpes virus to the genitals is much less than spreading genital herpes.
