knee mri showed torn meniscus and bone spurs. now dr wants bone scan.is that scan needed after mri. what would bone scan show that isn't on mri??

Generally,: finding a meniscal tear and bone spurs on a knee MRI doesn't require a bone scan for further evaluation.  There must be something else they are concerned about, but it is difficult to speculate with limited information.  Talk to your doctor about why the bone scan is needed.

i have a bakers cyst measuring 4.4 cm and "bone island" in the femur on right leg/knee. i also have a partial torn meniscus. is this serious?

Accepted Answer

Not life threatening: Not serious in the form of being life threatening.  The bone island is likely an incidental finding.  A bakers cyst in an adult is usually related to an underlying internal derangement of the knee, such as the meniscal tear you are describing.  If you are having trouble it is reasonably simple to take care of both arthroscopically.  Don't hesitate to be seen.

Post menisectomy: Anytime me part of ones meniscus is removed it leads to increase force across the exposed bone.Studies show that  removing part of the posterior medial meniscus decreases protection of the articular surface by 50%. Although this is of concern ,leaving a partially torn meniscus will result in more damage to the articular surface ,especially nit ones knee is unstable or locks intermitantly

Advance as tolerated: Not all meniscus tears are the same. Unless surgery is indicated to treat a symptomatic meniscus tear, you should be able to advance your workouts as tolerated using pain and swelling as your guide. Seek medical attention if your knee catches, buckles, or locks and will not move. Such circumstances may warrant a change in your treatment to operative management via arthroscopic surgery.

Not usually: Swimming can often be a fantastatic exercise for patients with knee injuries and patients suffering from arthritis. The water reduces the amount of pressure placed across the joint with activity. Aqua therapy is often a useful adjunct to a successful injury recovery program.

is a microfracture procedure advisable for a meniscus tear in the knee?

Accepted Answer

NO: Microfracture is done when the end of the bone cartilage surface has an area that is worn off.  You then use a small "pick" to puncture the bone in the area that the cartilage is worn off to try to make the bone bleed onto this surface and create some scar cartilage to form in the cartilage defect area.  The repair cartilage is not normal cartilage but can help some patients. Not for meniscus tear.

Repair vs debrided?: If you underwent a partial removal of the torn portion of the meniscus (partial mensicectomy), your recuperation period would generally be quicker than if you underwent a repair of the torn meniscus (meniscal repair). Jogging is routinely allowed by 3-4 months after meniscectomy, and after 4-6 months when it is repaired. Underlying arthritis (cartilage loss) would also slow your recovery.

i had my outer meniscus tear repaired and now the inside of my knee kills when i try to run. why is that?

Ortho evaluation now: A thorough examination by your treating surgeon or another orthopaedic surgeon should ascertain the more likely causes of your new onset medial knee pain. An MRI may be indicated to evaluate the status of the repaired lateral meniscus and to gain better detail regarding the internal derangement now potentially present within the medial aspect of your knee. Cartilage or meniscus injury are likely.
