Individual education plans describe the annual review & proposed plans for the coming year in kids with identified learning issues.In most areas, parents meat with the teachers & therapists to review current testing  & progress.This keeps people on a common path & allows the parent to sign & approve of plans (or not).

Varies by person: I have seen kids go both ways. There are some autistic kids who by their early teens are able to be assimilated into regular classrooms becomes they have made so much progress with therapy. I've also seen kids become increasingly aggressive and problematic as they hit puberty. Research shows that early intervention and social and language therapy are key to improved behavior and general health.

See below: It depends upon which part of the autistic spectrum the person is. Asperger patients are of normal intelligence, but the children on the other end, have mental impairment.

Autism Spectrum: Autism in children who are high functioning  may some times have add and anxiety symptoms and may need medications for that
but that decision has to be made by childs pediatri neuro psychiatrist.We can not recommend on this site, so make an appointment and discuss your concern with the doctor, and if doc feels meds will benefit he/she will prescribe, these meds do have side effects you should be awar.

OCD vs ASD: You should consult your doctor for a referral to mental health professionals for evaluation.  There are many approaches to managing the symptoms of both, non medication approaches including cognitive behavioral training as well as medications.

No: Being bilingual ia usually a strength.  Children can learn two languages at the same time without problems.  Though there is nothing protective about bewing bilingual regarding the risk or development of autism.

Accepted Answer

Requires expertise: Autism can present in many forms, and other disorders can have elements that can be mistaken for it.  Age also is important:   2 or 3 yo children present much differently than older ones or adolescents.  No behaviors associated with autism occur only with autism.  Experts look at the total picture, both how development is going and what impairments are present.  So, far no biological tests.

what are the adventages, if any, for bringing in a developmental-behavioral pediatrician specialist into a child's iep team?

Great idea: It would really help in identifying if there are any other areas that can help the child succeed. This is not my specialty but I have relied on those skilled pediatricians in helping with difficult cases.

Having a short : Umbilical cord is associated with a higher incidence of developmental delays, but not specifically autism. Call  child find of your local school district for free developmental assessment of your 4-yr.-old & early intervention of your state health division for free assessment of your 5-mo.-old, for peace of mind. could tenex (guanfacine) be used for severe autism in a boy of 7 yo that melatonin  7.5mg no longer help with sleep?

Maybe: A better alternative is Clonidine or kapvay.
