It is normal: You may experience sore throat, headache and earache  temporarily for 2-3 days as a result of your wisdom teeth surgery. Again, a sore throat and pain when swallowing are common.

Wisdom teeth post op: Initially ice packs. Two bags filled with ice, or ice packs should be applied to the sides of the face. The ice packs should be left on continuously while you are awake. After 24 hours, ice will not help. You may have pain and swelling for a few days. This is a normal reaction to surgery. After 36 hours only moist heat (warm washcloth) is recommended.

Doubtful: There would be no reason for an oral surgeon to place a dressing in your extraction site to promote more bleeding. If you have a problem following an extraction, call the office that extracted the tooth for further assistance.

Yes!: Trauma to the gum and mandible from dental extraction causes disruption of the dentition and surrounding structures.  Inflammatory mediators released from the area cause inflammation producing swelling, redness, warmth, and pain.  Topical ice pack application to the area leads to Coolness, then Burning, follow by Aching, finally Numbness (CBAN), interrupts inflammatory cascade, reduces swelling.

They usually don't.: In modern man, we usually don't have enough room for our wisdom teeth to erupt into a normal position in the mouth. 
They are referred to as being 'impacted' and  a recommendation is usually made to have them removed.
Wisdom teeth are fully formed by the mid-to late teen years, but may be removed before that time.
