Food allergy: Irritable bowel syndrome has bowel contractions that is a reaction to the chemicals being released by immunological reaction that is also called food allergy. There an irritable bowel component from mast cell fragility which can be caused by ingesting cold foods with weakened mast cell membranes. Be tested for food allergies and for mast cell fragility after you have stopped allergic foods.

Abdominal Discomfort: Ibs is a functional disorder affecting how food moves through your GI tract.  Lower abdominal pain, cramping, bloating with diarrhea, constipation or both are common signs.  It can be triggered by stress/anxiety or different foods.  The diagnosis is usually made by ruling out other disorders.

Diet and fluids: I rarely prescribe meds for ibs. In my experience teaching people to eat and drink properly resolves most if not all symptoms when the patient is compliant and follows through. Hi fiber, 80-100 ounces non caffeine, non alcoholic beverages each day, regular meal times, excercise. Consistency is the key to being symptom free.

Very similar: Symptoms of ibs and celiac's disease are very similar.  The diagnosis of ibs is a diagnosis of exclusion (ie the doctor has ruled out any other diseases that have similar symptoms).  Consult with your doctor to determine if a celiac work-up might be appropriate if has not all ready been done.

Rome 3 ; testing: Ibs is a diagnosis of exclusion. Rome 3 criteria helps. For example, mucus (a colon lubricant) when present in large volume may signal not only problems with colon spasm (ie. Irritable bowel syndrome), but also partial obstruction, infection, ; even sloughed colon lining. Testing distinguishes ibs from inflammatory bowel diseases (crohn's, ulcerative colitis), infection, ischemic gut. See doctor.

IBS: Rome criteria-recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort at least 3 days/month for past 3 months + 2 or more of these: improvement with bm, onset with change in bm , onset with frequency of bm, onset with change in bm form or appearance. Symptoms should be present for at least 3 months with symptoms present for 6 months prior to actual diagnosis. 2 main types-diarrhea or  constipation predominant.

Yes: Various activities or situations could cause the urge to have a bowel movement related to your ibs.  You should work with your primary physician or a gastroenterologist for treatments to help with your ibs symptoms.
