Check it out: I suggest that you be evaluated by your primary care physician and/or ENT eventually. Also, keep in mind that certain meds and supplements (fish oil for example) may thin your blood. Asa and Coumadin (warfarin) are well known culprits. Nose picking and excessive use of heat at night are the other two common causes. Occasionally blood disorders can be the cause.

They are sensitive to drying, irritants and allergies.Affected kids often wake to a bloody pillow after rubbing their nose in it during light sleep.This is a nose picking equivalent that can trigger the bleed.Liberal use of nasal saline or nasal saline gel at bedtime can reduce the frequency of bleeds.

Bloody nose: Here are some  possible reasons. Do any of them apply?  Nose bleed reasons: nasal congestion or nasal dryness, ^ blood pressure, excessive use of decongestants, being at ^ altitude, trauma to nose, nose picking, or blowing the nose hard. Bacterial & viral infections can ^ risk as well as bleeding disorders.  Recurrent nose bleeds may be due to broken vessel in the nose.

i woke up with blood in my mouth this am. my throat seemed dry causing me to wake up and causing me to cough a couple times. i don't have bloody nose?

Many possibilities: Could be a dental or gum issue, could be a slight bleed from a small superficial vessel in your throat or back of your tongue. If you have been taking Aspirin or non steroidal antiinflammatory medication it can make a tiny amount of blood more significant. Out of 100 people i see with stories like yours i find only 1 or 2 with anything significant. I still would recommend you see an ENT doctor.

Bloody nose: your symptoms are consistent with an upper respiratory infection and dryness in your nose causing some bleeding. Would recommend starting on some nasal saline and Mucinex-D over the counter (plain Mucinex if you have high blood pressure). See an ENT specialist if not resolving or worsening symptoms over next 7-10 days

Rest: Get some ice over your nasal bridge and lay down. Rest and try to relax. Your blood pressure may have been up if you have a headache though you are very young. Check your blood pressure out and then monitor it for s few reasons. If symptoms occur again see your doctor

Epistaxis: Nose bleeds are common in children with allergies or on antihistamines for allergies.  The inflammation from this hypersensitivity is often worse with dry air, nose picking, blowing, etc.  In the absence of any other abnormal bleeding (little red dots to the skin, bleeding from the gums, rectum, etc.) humidification of the bedroom with or without prescribed nasal steroid sprays is helpful.

You : You need to be evaluated by an otolaryngologist in short order.

Although bloody mucous can be benign secondary to bloody nose dripping into your throat ordue to local irritation/trauma in the throat from dry mucosa, coughing, gagging, or throat clearing, your history of smoking warrants a thorough evaluation of the nose, mouth, pharynx, and larynx (and possibly the lungs) to rule out more serious causes of bloody mucous.

If the blood is determined to be from the nose (epistaxis) your physician will counsel you on treatments to decrease the risk of continued bleeding, and may even treat you in the office. If there are other reasons for your bleeding additional testing and/or therapies may be needed, but it is imperative to have a qualified ENT examine you.
