?Ear infection?: Symptoms of an ear infection can range from ear pain to sensation of a plugged ear.  The pain may be a throbbing pain and it can be accompanied by tinnitus, which is the perception of sound in the absence of an external stimulus.  It may be time to see a doctor.

Ear wax: Your ear is likely blocked with wax. Get a bulb syringe and forcefully irrigate the ear. Or see you local ENT doctor. They can check it out and suction out the wax. Good luck.

Ringing, tinnitus: Though there are some benign causes for tinnitus, of which ringing is a form, if you have lost hearing, get this evaluated quickly.

Sudden hearing loss: You may have sudden hearing loss.  It is usually temporary but you should get checked there are treatments for it.  They work best when the problem is diagnosed and treated early.

Recurrence: Ringing may be due to several causes. If there was any injury, in particular, please follow up with your PCP soon. You may need additional testing.

Ear infection: You may have swimmer's ear or a middle ear infection. You should see your doc and get ear drops and/or oral antibiotics. There is, however, a chance you have a viral infection.  See your doc ASAP. Good healing!!!

Not sure...: Humming or ringing in one's ears should be evaluated by your md. Both air and bone conduction tests will distinguish between sensory, neural, and conductive hearing loss. Although the "hollow" sound you describe sounds like a normal tapping sound, if you're concerned an evaluation would be appropriate.
