Stop worrying: The most intensive CT scan delivers 20 mSV and most deliver far less. An airline pilot gets an extra 3 mSV per year; this is of course cumulative as a cancer risk but nobody's shown increased cancer in pilots. Nuclear industry regs allow up to 100 mSV in 5 years and they have no increased cancer risk either. The non-measurable risk from CT scans is worth it when you may be seriously sick.

: Modern day imaging techniques use high speed sensors that require a very, very low dose. The dose is for diagnostic purposes. You are more likely to die from an undiagnosed illness than you are from the radiation.

CT cancer: All radiation is a risk factor for cancer. Including walking in the sun. It is impossible to answer your question in an individual. Risk is cumulative the more x-rays (or sun) the greater the risk. Would worry about other things.

A risk: Ct scan can cause a very small increase in the risk of cancer if frequent scans are done over the lifetime.  Currently, there is no guideline recommending the limit of ct scans.  Having one ct scan at age 30 is likely not to have any significant consequence.  Be sure to discuss with your doctor before each scan to see if it's medically necessary.

when people are sick, why do drs always have to say they need to rule out cancer. that causes me to panic cause my dr wanted ct scan for imbalance.

It's ethical now: There was a time that doctors hid these things from patients. Then they told some patients who they regarded as strong. Now, it's considered the right thing to do since patients have a right to know about themselves. If you really don't - tell the doctor to write it clearly on your chart. You might have to sign and date the request to be kept in the dark. A therapist may help w/ the anxiety. Best!

Non: The potential for a cat scan of the chest causing cancer is non.  One would need frequent scans to even be associated with cancer.  Obviously in a very young patient, the tissue is more sensitive to radiation and as such radiation to the chest from mammograms are of no consequence in the patient over 50, but in a patient under 30 radiation exposure does put the patient at risk.

Lung nodules: There is no cause of concern for ct scan causing cancer. You should be more worried about these nodules, as not to be cancer. Interestingly you didn't mention bronchoscopy, cell cytology or biopsy , fluid culture or petscan. Some information missing! two years! you have to find out the cause of these nodules. Thanks.
