i've been taking lithium for a yr. i'm also on tegretol. i'm having stomach cramps, back pain, but no period. period is a week late. is it the pills?

Pills and menses: Lithium and tegretol are not likely to influence your menses . . . . But with the symptoms you describe, i'm wondering if you're also taking birth control pills?  Could you be pregnant?   Might be helpful to check a home pregnancy test -- available in any drug store.  Also, see your physician.

Missed period: The most common reason for a missed menstrual period is pregnancy, but there are other possible causes also.  Losing weight quickly can cause you to miss your period; obesity may interrupt it also.  Stress can interfere with ovulation and disrupt menses.  Other causes include strenuous exercise; thyroid disease; medications; eating disorders; shift changes.  Your period may still arrive.

See a GYN MD: Removal of the IUD should not have stopped your periods unless there are abnormalities of the uterus itself (no endometrium) or diseases such as thyroid or other hormonal disorders that affect the menstrual cycle. Please make an appointment with a GYN MD to sort out the issues.

Common complaint: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections &  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

Stress: In general having stress in your life doesn't have too much of an effect on cramping.  If you are mid way between your periods the cramping could be from ovulation.  This is called mittelschmerz.  Some women have it monthly, but others just rarely.  If the cramping continues check a pregnancy test and then schedule with a gynecologist to rule out infection or other possible causes.

Period cramps: Some people cramp when they're about to get their period. If you missed your period please get a pregnancy test. Mild cramps can occur in early normal pregnancy. More severe cramps in abnormal pregnancies i.E ectopic , missed abortion, molar etc.Most of these are accompanied by bleeding of some sort.  If negative pregnancy think of intestine, bladder etc. Please see a dr if you missed your period.

If new, get checked.: Greetings. Bad cramps can occur before a period starts with PMS. If period is late, it is good to take a home pregnancy test. Bad cramps when pregnant can be a sign of etopic/pregnancy complications and needs care ASAP. If you are having bad cramps that is new or different than what you have encountered in the past, prompt medical care is important to rule out appendicitis or other serious issues.

It sounds like you: may have been passing out from low blood count (anemia) or low blood pressure (hypotension).  Either of these conditions could alter your cycle especially if chronic.
