Your issue is likely complex and may benefit from a change in medication more than pushing your heart to do more than it should. i have dcm and bi vent pacemaker. is it possible that if i had too much salt i can have shortness of breath? within how many hours of eating?

Accepted Answer

Not: Salt draws in fluid. People with dcm don't handle excess fluid well.  That's why diuretics like lasix(furosemide) are used. If a single meal with extra salt causes you to tip over into decompensated chf, you need an adjustment in your overall regimen. It's not a 1:1 ratio with a fixed time course like a the effects of a drug.

Combination: The disease and possibly your medications can cause sleepiness.
About shortness of breath and heart racing also miight be due to dcm.

: While these values given are not specific , obtain a referral to a cardiologist, or go to an ER since weakness, dizziness and shortness of breath need more definitive testing for a diagnosis.

If : If you are experiencing shortness of breath and difficulty breathing when laying down, these are signs of congestive heart failure, and more specifically left heart failure. In left heart failure, fluid builds up in the lungs causing shortness of breath and difficulty breathing when laying down. Fatigue is also a sign that your heart may be working too hard. See a doctor sooner than your appointment. Go to the emergency room to be assessed if you can not get in right away to see your cardiologist.

If your symptoms: have worsened significantly - please don't try to self- diagnose. At minimum you need to see your doctor or cardiologist/ pulmonologist. It you have acute distress you should be urgently evaluated.

Pneumonia: There is a condition called post pneumonic asthenia which can take months to resolve after pneumonia. However you should see your Doc to be checked to be sure that something else isn't going on.

Pneumonia: It is fairly common to continue to have shortness of breath and weakness following an episode of pneumonia. I tell patients try to stay active during this time and they begin to feel themselves again a matter of weeks. If 4-6 weeks have gone by without any improvement, then you need to be reevaluated by your physician.

Yes: 1st did you finish antibiotics as directed by your diagnosing physician? 2nd were you prescribed appropriate antibiotic for your infection, as guided by sputum culture. 3rd did chest xray confirm no fluid (effusion) or consolidation? Pleura or lining of lung can be inflamed causing pain. But don't forget that pneumonia is a big deal so it can take time for lungs to recover full breathing ability.
