Many things: Acanthosis nigricans causes dark, velvety patches of skin on the neck & skin folds and since it can be associated with diabetes or other health issues, it is important to have it looked at.  Many other causes exist:  sun-exposure, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, tinea versicolor, other rashes & even retained dirt (terra firma-forme) are just a few!  see a dermatologist.

Not natural: You have melasma, which is caused by the sun, hormones ( including the bcp) and other reasons that we do not understand. It is usually treated with bleaching creams and the constant use of a sunblock which has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in it.

Depends: If from sun, will fade over winter (recent sun) . If from trauma will  also fade.  Other wise may need a bleaching cream or laser tx-would see a dermatologist.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Everyone should use sunscreen.  Those with more pigment are less likely to develop skin cancer, but with enough ultraviolet exposure, it is possible.

A good, broad-spectrum sunscreen with zinc oxide (eg. Coppertone faces) applied daily with reduce the chance of premature aging and skin cancer.

Tinea corporis: is most likely, although a picture would be helpful.  Tinea is a fungal (yeast) infection of the skin that causes hyperpigmented (dark), scaly blotches that itch.  Tinea tends to itch more when a person gets hot and/or sweaty, as the fungus thrives in a warm, moist environment.  Tinea can be treated with antifungal creams and/or medication by mouth.

Elbows : Darkening of thickened skin of the elbows may respond to a moisturizer containing lactic acid. Lachydrin cream or lotion is a prescription.  See a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

i am experiencing  wrist pain sensitivity .  skin pigmentation,  thinning  and extreme burning up the arm from an  steroid injection ( many more side effects) my whole body is effected at this point .what is going on from this and what can i do ?

Steroids: Some typical side effects are sensitivity, skin pigmentation changes and thinning of the skin around the injection site.  The burning sensation up the arm would not be typical.  Some people do get some systemic effects from the steroid.  You should call your doctor if concerned.

when i tilt my head forward & look down or lie on my stomach propped up on my elbows, my eyes feel pressure, & go cross-eyed. why is this?

Double vision?: Multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, disorders in the cerebellum (the balance &amp; coordination part of the brain) and in the connections between the brain, inner ear and eye muscles can potentially cause double vision.  Based on the info you provided, you are already being evaluated for some kind of neuromuscular problem.  I It's VERY IMPORTANT that you report this system to your doctor(s).

It really depends: on why there is dark skin in this area. If it is related to a fungus then an antifungal cream may help. But if it's post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation then you need a lightening agent. If it's hereditary, you may need laser or peels
