Gall bladder? C MD: Gall bladder and liver are under the right side of ribs (colon too) problem with any of them can cause pain, tenderness to touch; swelling more likely associated with inflamed gall bladder. Less likely other possibilities.

Costochondritis: This type of pain is usually benign - typically a pulled intercostal muscle or costochondritis. More serious conditions include pneumonia or pulmonary embolism (you'd be much sicker, short of breath etc with these conditions).

i have intermittent intense burning pain just below the left side of my ribs. i get this mostly w/ sitting and feel better w/ stretching or lying down. sometimes i can feel a muscle spasm and it is tender to the touch. ?

Sprain?: You might have sprained your rib cage by limiting something heavy, straining, or assuming an unusual posture.  However a rib fracture cannot  be ruled out.  If this pain is not relieved with cold/hot pack and NSAID after 2 weeks or gets worse, consult your family doctor.

Shingles?: You didn't post an age or any medical history.  What you are describing could be the onset of shingles,  Shingles are the resurgence of the chicken pox virus that lays dormant in sensory nerve cells and reemerges at times of stress and low immunity.  If you have had the chicken pox in the past, shingles is a possibility.  Pain and itching usually occur before a pox like rash occurs.

For this reason, it’s important that you contact your doctor if your pain is unexplained, persistent, or severe — Spectrum of illlness  /D/D includes  Heart Attack, IBS, trapped gas, Pericarditis, Angina, GERD, IBD, Ulcer ,Pancreatitis .

Pain: You probably pulled a muscle with your coughing. It should settle down and disappear .If it does not see a doctor and get a definitive diagnosis.An anti- inflammatory may help such as Advil (ibuprofen) or Aleeve

Several possible: under the left rib cage, could be a hernia, a rib cyst, a fatty tumor aka lipoma, a traumatic hematoma, or seroma. Absent fever or significant pain, you can watch it for a week or 2. If it gets bigger, go in to see your doc. If it goes away, no worries. Be well.
