Let advise you: Press on skin over tibia (chin bone). Then run pads of fingers over the area pressed and note if there is an indentation. If indentation is noted. If this test show indentation this means it is not fat it is fluid (edema), if did not show this means it is fat.

Water Dominant: Our primary vehicle (body) is majority water molecules, typically ~55-62% (greater to lower fat). Thus any new swelling most likely water accumulation, edema, in the area. Blood, water with added salts, proteins & cells, is only ~7% of total body, thus only possibly involved. Us commonly used to see clots in veins, not in tissues. Us cannot see clots in tissues, especially if diffuse, just echos.

: When you injure something higher up on your leg with swelling and bruising, it prevents the normal fluid being removed from the part of the leg that is lower than the injury and therfore it swells.

Rest, ice, elevate: Rest, ice, and elevation are helpful.  If you are having severe pain, severe bruising, can't bear weight, or have a history of breaking bones easily, you should consider getting x-rays to make sure you didn't break your leg.

Blood clot: You need to have the leg examined for a possible deep or superficial vein clot. A ruptured baker's cyst or a knee effusion are other possible causes. It needs an exam and possibly xrays and/or ultrasound to sort this out.

Knee problem: Elevate your leg/foot, put ice, wrap and let it rest for a few days or until able to walk. Crutches may be helpful. See your doc in the next few days especially if no improvement is seen.

Swelling: If you have swelling from knee down on one side I would be very suspicious for a DVT.  This should be checked.
